Get ready for an incredible journey as Vancouver gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup! With just a hundred days left, TransLink is unveiling an ambitious plan to ensure a smooth and memorable experience for hundreds of thousands of fans. But here's where it gets controversial... they're overhauling the SkyTrain access system!

TransLink, the public transit authority, has outlined a comprehensive strategy to manage the massive influx of fans while maintaining reliable service for locals. This approach builds on Vancouver's rich history of hosting global events, from the World Expo to the Olympic Games.

"Vancouver is the ultimate host city," says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. "Our transit system has been a key player in these successes, and we're ready to step up for the FIFA Men's World Cup."

And this is the part most people miss: TransLink recently had a mini-dress rehearsal for this massive operation during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour stop in December 2024.

During the tournament, which runs from June 11 to July 19, BC Place Stadium will host seven matches, including group stages and knockout rounds. But here's a twist: the Stadium-Chinatown and Yaletown-Roundhouse SkyTrain stations won't provide direct access to the stadium on match days due to security measures.

Spectators are directed to use the Main Street-Science World Station, from where they'll walk along a car-free pedestrian route, known as the "Last Mile," to reach the stadium. This route will be the only access point on match days, with no entry from Beatty Street or Expo Boulevard.

The SkyTrain will play a crucial role, with increased frequency and extended hours, especially before and after matches. Trains at downtown stations are expected to run every two minutes during peak times.

"We're scaling up service to move large crowds safely and reliably," Quinn adds. "Our system is built for major events, and we're ready for the world's biggest stage."

TransLink plans to add around 600 extra bus trips daily during the tournament, including dedicated shuttle services to the FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park. The festival, with a capacity of over 25,000 fans daily, will feature a new 10,000-seat amphitheater for live screenings, concerts, and performances.

Additional buses will circulate through downtown, and TransLink will monitor crowds in real-time, deploying standby buses as needed. SeaBus sailings will operate at least every 15 minutes, with 10-minute intervals before and after local matches.

For weekend matches, TransLink will introduce special West Coast Express commuter rail service, offering round-trip trains on game days.

Accessible services are also being adjusted, with HandyDART operating from designated locations near BC Place and the FIFA Fan Festival.

TransLink will deploy additional frontline staff, including attendants, police, security officers, and volunteers, to manage crowds and ensure safety.

The increased public transit services are funded by the FIFA World Cup operating budget, similar to how VANOC funded services during the 2010 Olympics.

With extensive road closures and traffic controls expected near event venues, officials emphasize public transit as the most efficient way to reach BC Place Stadium and the PNE.
