The AFL world is reeling as a star player makes a shock retirement just days before the season kicks off, following a tumultuous period off the field. This abrupt departure has sent ripples through the league, leaving many to ponder the circumstances surrounding his exit. Fox Footy analyst David King aptly summarized the situation, stating, “He’s read the writing on the wall.”
Steven May, a celebrated former Melbourne Demons superstar and an inaugural player for the Gold Coast Suns, announced his decision to step away from the game via social media. This comes after a challenging twelve months that have clearly taken their toll. His retirement, at the age of 34, is particularly significant given his pivotal role in the Demons' long-awaited 2021 premiership victory, where he famously played through injury in the Grand Final against the Western Bulldogs. His acquisition by the Demons from the Suns after the 2018 season was a masterstroke, forming a formidable defensive partnership with Jake Lever.
But here's where it gets controversial... May reportedly negotiated a settlement with the club, allowing him to leave while still under contract. This move follows a month-long absence from the team after police were called to his residence in late January due to a complaint. Adding to the off-field drama, May and former teammate Dion Prestia were also charged in relation to an alleged pub brawl in December 2024. They have since sought to have these charges dismissed, asserting they were not present during the incident.
May's decision to announce his retirement on social media on Sunday night, rather than informing his teammates as expected on Monday, has added another layer to the narrative. In his heartfelt Instagram post, May expressed, “It’s with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to step away and retire from the AFL. It’s an incredibly tough decision to make on the eve of the season but I know it’s the right one for myself, my family and the team.” He reflected on his journey from Darwin, fulfilling his childhood dream of playing AFL, and expressed immense gratitude to both the Gold Coast Suns for his initial opportunity and the Melbourne Football Club for believing in him. He specifically mentioned the “lifelong relationships and memories” he’s forged with the Demons. May concluded by stating, “Right now the club, Kingy and the boys deserve some clean air and no distractions moving forward, and I wish the lads nothing but success ahead. Very exciting times for our fans. Forever grateful. Mayzy.”
And this is the part most people miss... May's retirement, occurring before the 5 pm Monday deadline, opens up an opportunity for the Demons to potentially add a rookie to their list, though they currently have no trainees ready to fill such a spot. It's understood May was set to earn over $700,000 this year. While the Demons were open to trading him in the off-season, he reportedly found no takers due to a perceived decline in his form. Throughout his illustrious career, May played 251 AFL games, with 128 for Melbourne and 123 for Gold Coast, earning dual All-Australian honors.
