Why Venus is the Closest Comparison

The combination of a thick, hazy atmosphere with detectable carbon dioxide sets Enaiposha apart from other sub-Neptunes and our solar system's ice giants. Instead, it shares similarities with Venus - a planet known for its dense carbon dioxide atmosphere, sulfuric acid clouds, and extreme greenhouse effect. The term "super Venus" captures this unique blend of qualitative similarity and quantitative difference.

The detection of carbon dioxide has further implications. To match the observed abundance, the atmosphere must be enriched to levels far exceeding that of Uranus and Neptune, pointing to a formation process that involved a significant influx of solid material.

Methane's presence adds another layer of complexity. At the expected temperatures in Enaiposha's atmosphere, methane and carbon dioxide should not coexist in equilibrium. This suggests either photochemical processes or vertical mixing, where different atmospheric layers interact.

The Journey Continues

While the detection is statistically significant, the research team emphasizes that it's still preliminary. More observations are needed to confirm and refine these findings. Future studies could target multiple transits or explore different wavelength regions to detect other molecular species.

The current data leaves room for multiple atmospheric models. Additional observations at shorter or longer wavelengths could provide the necessary constraints to distinguish between these models. Complementary data from the MIRI phase curve observations also points to high atmospheric metallicity and the presence of water vapor.
