A tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for accountability after a nearly blind refugee, who spoke no English, was found dead in New York state. Nurul Amin Shah Alam's death has raised concerns about the treatment of vulnerable individuals by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers.
According to Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan, the 56-year-old man's death was preventable and deeply disturbing. He was left alone on a cold winter night, with no attempt to ensure his safety or well-being. Ryan described the CBP's actions as unprofessional and inhumane, emphasizing the vulnerability of the individual involved.
CBP officials, however, provided a different account. They stated that the Buffalo Police Department alerted them about a noncitizen in their custody on February 19. Shah Alam, who entered the U.S. as a refugee in December 2024, was deemed 'not amenable to removal' and could not be deported. Border Patrol agents offered him a ride to a coffee shop, which he accepted, as it was considered a warm and safe location near his last known address.
The agency claimed that Shah Alam showed no signs of distress, mobility issues, or disabilities requiring special assistance. They declined to provide information about his family or friends being notified, as well as the country of origin. The Buffalo Police Department's initial efforts to locate Shah Alam were unsuccessful, and they later confirmed his death.
This incident has sparked a debate about the responsibility of government agencies in ensuring the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals. New York Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of accountability and an independent investigation, stating that no one should disappear at the hands of the government.
