Duncan Powell’s three-game suspension by the Big East is the latest fallout from Saturday’s highly charged Providence versus St. John’s contest, where Powell’s actions helped ignite a fracas. Early in the second half of the 17th-ranked Johnnies’ win at Amica Mutual Pavilion, Powell tackled Bryce Hopkins with a clothesline, a move that sparked a confrontation. Hopkins rose, shoved Powell, and Powell responded by throwing a punch at St. John’s forward Dillon Mitchell. The melee resulted in six players being ejected, Powell among them. Powell’s punishment consists of an automatic one-game suspension for fighting plus two additional games, with no further suspensions announced.
St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino defended the team’s approach, saying, “We didn’t initiate anything. Toughness isn’t about turning the ball over or avoiding contact; it’s about possessions like creating steals and grabbing offensive rebounds.” He also noted that the season had already been tense. Providence fans heightened the atmosphere with chants targeting Hopkins during his return to Friartown.
St. John’s ultimately prevailed, 79-69, securing their 11th straight win and setting a program record by capturing a 10th consecutive road win in Big East play.
In the Big East release, officials stated that Powell engaged in additional combative actions that qualified as a fighting act after the initial flagrant foul. The incident occurred with 14:25 left in the second half, and the ensuing momentum swing helped St. John’s pull away in the final minutes.
But here’s where it gets controversial: should a single moment of aggressive play define a player’s entire contribution, or should context and intent weigh more heavily in judging toughness and discipline? This incident raises questions about limits on physical play, the responsibility of veteran leaders to de-escalate, and how fans’ emotions can influence on-court conduct. Do you think the punishment fits the situation, or is there room for a different approach to discipline in high-tension games? Share your thoughts in the comments.
