Australia's top beaches for 2026 have been announced, and the West has emerged as a shining star. Rottnest and Esperance coastlines have been ranked among the nation's best, but this list has sparked debate. Curated by Brad Farmer, an expert and Tourism Australia's 'beach ambassador', the annual list narrows down the hundreds of famous shorelines across the country to a definitive top 10. Farmer embarked on the onerous task of cross-checking each beach against 130 checkpoints, with more attention paid to lesser-known coasts.
"This year's list is a celebration of the quiet, soulful spots that define our coastal identity and offer a true escape for those willing to wander a little further," Mr. Farmer said. The surprise winner of the coveted crown is Bates Bay in southern Sydney, NSW, a favorite among locals. West Aussies can take pride in the silver medal awarded to Pinky Beach on Rottnest Island, praised for its crystal-clear water and sheltered pockets, offering both relaxation and great surfing.
Farmer highlighted Rottnest's shores, noting their sunny aspect, calm waters, and shallow reefs dotted with seagrass, perfect for snorkeling. Travelers can enjoy a full view from the nearby Bathurst Lighthouse or explore local restaurants and accommodations. Hellfire Bay outside Esperance was named the fifth best in Australia, often overshadowed by the renowned Lucky Bay. Its stunning views and pristine water within Cape Le Grand National Park earned Farmer's praise.
"The contrast between the pale sand, rounded boulders, and shifting ocean colors is striking and changes with the light throughout the day," Farmer said. Despite surrounding beaches beloved for 4WD opportunities, Hellfire Bay's secluded nature has helped preserve its natural beauty. However, not everyone agreed with the list. Today show host Karl Stefanovic strongly disagreed, stating, 'I think itβs the worst list Iβve ever seen.'
This is the second year in a row that Farmer's list features two beaches from Western Australia, with Little Lagoon and Scarborough Beach taking the fifth and eighth spots, respectively, in 2025. The list has sparked controversy, but it also invites discussion and encourages readers to share their thoughts in the comments.
